Top 5 Ways to Eat Clean and Stay Fit through the Holidays

The holiday season most likely presents the biggest and longest challenge to your healthy eating plan. With all of the holiday parties, cookie baking and exchanging, not to mention family holiday dinners (where Mom or Grandma MUST show you how much they love you through food), it is nearly impossible to escape the season without putting on a pound or two. If you are able to maintain your weight, that is a bonus. Here are some tips for eating clean and staying fit during the holiday season.

1. Eat before you go to a holiday party. Make sure that you have something healthy like an apple, salad, or a piece of grilled chicken to ensure that you aren’t starving when you arrive. This will help you make more sensible choices. Remember to exercise portion control as well.

2. Monitor alcohol intake. If you are going to have a holiday cocktail, do your best to keep it to just one. When you consume alcohol, your body works to process it and puts fat burning on hold. Not to mention that consuming alcohol lowers your inhibitions and increases your appetite. Go ahead and celebrate, but savor one cocktail throughout the night. This is best if you plan to be driving home as well.

3. DO NOT hang out by the buffet table. Being in close proximity to the food table makes it harder not to “graze”. If you are engaged in a conversation with someone at the buffet table, it is easy to mindlessly nibble and the next thing you know, you have racked up quite a few (most likely unhealthy) calories. Get a small plate, select only the things that you really want to try and walk away from the table. If you follow rule #1, you won’t feel the need to make a second trip.

4. Schedule your workouts…in pen. And make sure to keep track of them. Use your HyperStrike account to log your workouts and hold yourself accountable. You will be rewarded by less stress, more energy and being able to fit in your holiday party attire!

5. Have a plan for the big celebration. You know the old saying, “failing to plan is planning to fail” and it couldn’t be truer than in this situation. Do some research on your favorite dishes that you know will appear at the holiday festivities and choose wisely. If you want to indulge, make it worth it; slow down and savor every bite of your holiday favorites.

Remember that the holidays are certainly a time for friends, family, fun and celebration. Learning to celebrate in moderation is often the biggest challenge of all, but by following these tips you are sure to have a wonderful holiday without weight gain!
