Back Exercises

Workout-X® is an excellent resource for back exercises. We have included exercises and stretches that can be done without any equipment at home, using a home gym, or with your favorite work out buddy at the local gym. It does not matter where you choose to spend your workout time; we have back exercises that will meet your needs.

Keeping your back strong is the best way to prevent back pain. The back forms part of the core which, when strong, can prevent injury during just about any activity. Before starting any back exercises it is a good idea to warm up the major muscles of the body with some quick and easy cardio such as jumping jacks or jogging in place. Typically, two to five minutes of cardio should be enough to get your muscles warm enough to get blood flowing.

Once warmed up, there are more than 170 back exercises and stretches to choose from on Workout-X®. You can sort them by the type of equipment you want to use or just look at the ones that require no equipment at all.

After your aerobic warm-up to get the blood flowing more freely to your muscles, try three of the most popular back stretches found on Workout-X®:

Cat-Dog Stretch

Cobra Stretch

Lumbar Stretch

When you are ready to really focus on the muscles of your back and shoulder girdle, here is a back exercises circuit you can repeat a couple of times before moving on to another large muscle group. Make sure you are adding some cardio in between sets to keep your heart rate up and maximize calorie burning during your workout.

Back Extension Bench

Ball Superman on Toes

Ball Thoracic Extension

Band Lat Pulldowns

The above set is just one example of a 4-part back exercises circuit that you could do. Spend some time looking around Workout-X® to find the back exercises that fit your needs the best. Make sure you work all of the major muscles in the upper and lower back.

Additionally, since one of the keys to building a strong core is to keep it balanced, you need to make sure you are exercising your front and back equivalently. Honestly, in our culture, it will probably mean spending more time on your back because those muscles get stretched out quite a bit as we hunch over our computers and televisions. When the muscles of the back, both upper and lower, are strong enough, we'll automatically walk with better posture and project an image of self-confidence.

Protecting your back while exercising is one of the most important things you can do in the gym. As part of your core, a strong back provides stability and good posture. These two things can benefit you in just about every aspect of your life.
